Focused tools for common ACT Math calculations

This bundle is designed for students who already know the mathematics but want efficient calculator tools available for calculations that can otherwise require several steps or repeated calculator entry.

Instead of one large all-purpose solver, the bundle contains 20 separate, single-purpose programs. You identify the type of problem, select the appropriate program, enter the values from the question, and the program performs its specific calculation.

The programs are intended to support mathematical problem solving—not replace it. Students should practice with the programs before test day so they know which program applies and how to enter the required information.

Watch this short introduction to see several of the programs solve representative ACT-style math calculations and learn how the 20-program bundle is organized.

20 programs included

Each program has one defined mathematical purpose, making it easier to select the appropriate tool for the problem in front of you.

Algebra & Functions — 8 Programs
QUADROOT Finds the numerical real roots of a quadratic equation.
SYS2EQ Solves a 2×2 system of linear equations.
POLYVAL Evaluates a polynomial of degree four or lower at a specified value of x.
EXPEVAL Evaluates an exponential function at a specified x-value.
EXPSOLVE Numerically solves an exponential equation of the supported form.
LQINTER Finds real intersection point(s) between a line and a quadratic.
SLOPESTD Finds the slope of a line written in standard form, Ax + By = C.
SLOPE2 Finds slope from two coordinate points.
Sequences, Ratios & Percent — 6 Programs
ARITHN Finds the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
ARITHSUM Finds the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence.
RATPART Divides a total quantity according to a three-part ratio.
PROP4 Solves a proportion of the form A/B = X/D.
PCTOF Calculates a specified percent of a number.
PCTCHG Calculates percent change from an old value to a new value.
Statistics & Probability — 3 Programs
WMEAN Calculates a weighted or frequency mean.
MEDFREQ Finds the median from values and their frequencies.
EXPECTED Calculates expected value from outcomes and decimal probabilities.
Geometry & Trigonometry — 3 Programs
PYTHLEG Finds a missing leg of a right triangle from the hypotenuse and known leg.
TANOPP Finds the opposite side of a right triangle using tangent.
ARCLEN Calculates arc length from radius and central angle in degrees.

Examples of what the programs can do

Here are several representative calculations from the bundle.

QUADROOT
x² − 5x + 6 = 0
Enter A = 1, B = −5, C = 6
Result: x = 3 and x = 2
SYS2EQ
2x + y = 11
x − y = 1
Enter the six equation coefficients
Result: x = 4, y = 3
EXPSOLVE
5(3)2x = 405
Enter A = 5, B = 3, K = 2, D = 0, C = 405
Result: x = 2
RATPART
Divide 240 in the ratio 5:3:2
Enter total = 240 and ratio parts 5, 3, 2
Result: 120, 72, 48
WMEAN
Values 70, 80, 90 with weights 1, 2, 1
Enter each value and corresponding weight
Result: weighted mean = 80
ARCLEN
Radius 12, central angle 60°
Enter radius = 12 and angle = 60
Result: ≈ 12.56637 (4π)

Important ACT calculator-policy information

These programs have been designed around ACT's current requirements for single-purpose mathematics programs. They are written in the calculator's native TI-BASIC language, do not call other programs, do not provide computer algebra system (CAS) functionality, and each is designed to remain within ACT's current 25-logical-line limit.

These programs are not described as “ACT approved.” ACT does not provide a blanket approval of every individual third-party calculator program.

ACT policies can change. Students are responsible for reviewing the current official ACT Calculator Policy and CAS Calculator FAQ before test day and ensuring that their calculator and its contents comply with the rules in effect for their test.

Test-day reminder: ACT currently requires calculators capable of storing documents to have all documents removed, regardless of their purpose. Programs with CAS functionality must also be removed. Do not leave the PDF user guide or other documents stored on the calculator for ACT testing.

Practice selecting and using focused calculator tools before test day.

Students who already use a TI-84

Add purpose-built numerical tools while continuing to use a familiar calculator.

Parents looking for a focused study aid

The included guide explains what every program does and provides a test question for each one.

What these programs do—and what they don't do

  • They do: perform specific numerical calculations once you identify the appropriate mathematical method and enter the required values.
  • They do: provide focused tools for selected algebra, function, sequence, ratio, percentage, statistics, probability, geometry, and trigonometry calculations.
  • They do not: read or interpret ACT questions for you.
  • They do not: automatically determine which program should be used.
  • They do not: provide CAS or general symbolic-algebra functionality.
  • They do not: replace ACT Math preparation or mathematical understanding.
