How to Install TI-84 Plus CE Calculator Programs 2026

Martin McSweeney

Whether you're prepping for the SAT, powering through AP Physics, or surviving Calculus BC, TI-84 Plus CE calculator programs can save you serious time and reduce careless errors. This guide walks you through exactly how to download and install programs on your TI-84 Plus CE — from software setup to your first program running on-screen.

Note for European users: If you have a TI-84 Plus CE-T calculator, the process may work — but start with the free program first to confirm compatibility before purchasing anything.

What You'll Need (The Short List)

Before anything else, confirm you have these three things:

1. A TI-84 Plus CE or TI-84 Plus CE Python calculator
These two models are fully supported. The European CE-T may work — test with the free program first.

2. Your charging cable
That's the USB-A to USB Mini cable that came with your calculator. (Note: The upcoming TI-Evo is expected to use USB-C, but we'll deal with that when the time comes.)

3. A PC or Mac
This is important: Chromebooks cannot download .8xp program files and will not work for this process. You need a Windows PC or Mac.

Step 1: Download TI Connect CE (Free)

TI Connect CE is the free software that lets your computer communicate with your calculator. If you already have it installed, skip to Step 2.

👉 Download TI Connect CE from TI.com

Install it on your computer, then open it. The software may feel a little slower than what you're used to — that's normal. The communication between your computer, cable, and calculator is just inherently slower than most modern tech. Give it a moment at each step and you'll be fine.

Step 2: Connect Your Calculator

  1. Turn on your TI-84 Plus CE. It needs to be on — it won't connect if it's off.
  2. Plug in your charging cable — one end to your calculator, one end to your computer.
  3. Double-check both connection points. A loose cable is a surprisingly common culprit.
  4. In TI Connect CE, you should now see a small icon of your calculator appear in the window.

If you see that icon, you're most of the way there.

Step 3: Verify Your Software and Calculator OS

Three things to check before downloading any programs:

A) Is your computer up to date?
Outdated operating systems on your PC or Mac have caused connection problems for students. If things aren't working, check for computer updates first — it's an easy fix that's easy to overlook.

B) Is your TI Connect CE version current?
If you downloaded it recently (2026), you should be fine. If it's been a while, re-download from the link above to get the latest version.

C) What OS is your calculator running?
You can check this in TI Connect CE — it displays in the calculator icon area. Your calculator needs OS 5.4 or higher for all programs on mcstutoring.com to work correctly.

  • OS 5.4 or above? You're good to go.
  • OS 5.3 or lower? Update via TI Connect CE using the link above.

Step 4: Download Your Free Program

Head to mcstutoring.com and download the Free TI-84 Starter Bundle.

👉 Get the Free Starter Bundle

The bundle is genuinely free — no catch. A discount code is displayed on the product page. Copy it, paste it into the discount code field at checkout, and your total will be $0.

Once you complete checkout, you'll receive a download link on the confirmation screen. Click it and save the .8xp file to your desktop or a dedicated folder on your computer.

Buying a bundle later? You'll receive multiple .8xp files — one per program. They're named logically: Mech1 and Mech2 for Physics Mechanics (semesters 1 and 2), Gaslaws for Gas Laws, Thermo for Thermodynamics, Waves for Wave Mechanics, UnitCon for Unit Conversion, and so on. Unit Conversion is included in most bundles.

Step 5: Transfer the Program to Your Calculator

With TI Connect CE open, your calculator on, and your cable connected:

  1. Locate your downloaded .8xp file on your desktop.
  2. Click and drag the file onto your calculator icon in TI Connect CE.
  3. A permission prompt will appear — confirm it.
  4. Wait a moment while the file transfers.

To confirm the transfer worked, press PRGM on your calculator. If prompted, select TI Basic. You should see your program listed in the menu. If it's there, you're done.

Step 6 (Optional): Get 30% Off Your First Paid Purchase

Subscribe to the mcstutoring.com email newsletter and you'll receive a 30% discount code for your first program purchase, plus periodic discount offers going forward. Completely optional — but if you're planning to buy a bundle, it's worth doing first.

Step 7: Choosing the Right Program for Your Needs

A few things worth knowing before you buy:

  • SAT Program: Fully revised and compliant with College Board SAT calculator regulations. SAT-safe as of Fall 2025.
  • Chemistry & Physics Programs: Permitted on AP exams per the most recent College Board AP calculator policy (Fall 2025). These are full solvers — they show the formula, let you select the unknown variable, and solve for it.
  • Calculus & Pre-Calculus Programs: These are formula reference tools, not solvers. Great for studying and quick lookups.
  • Bundles are the best value. The Chemistry Bundle includes both Chem 1 and Chem 2, for example. Read the descriptions before purchasing.
  • Free updates for life. When programs are updated, existing customers are notified by email and receive updates automatically.
  • Your input shapes the programs. Many updates have come directly from student requests. If you want a feature added, ask — understanding that some requests may not be technically feasible given calculator or coding limitations.

Step 8: Managing Calculator Memory

New TI-84 Plus CE calculators ship with approximately 150KB of RAM — enough for roughly a dozen programs or 2–3 large bundles.

Golden rule: Always keep your .8xp files on your computer. Think of your computer as a library and your calculator as a backpack. Your library can hold everything; your backpack holds what you need right now.

Two ways to manage memory:

Option 1 — Delete programs you're not currently using. They're still safe on your computer. Swap them in and out as needed by semester or exam.

Option 2 — Archive programs on your calculator. Your TI-84 has an archive memory that functions like a hidden compartment in your backpack. Archived programs aren't immediately accessible — you'll need to unarchive them to run them — but they free up RAM when not needed.

Watch the video below for a full walkthrough of how to move programs to Archive (ARC) memory and run them without permanently unarchiving them:

Heads up: A standard RAM reset will delete all RAM files. A hard reset (such as an OS update or battery replacement) will wipe your archive as well. This is exactly why keeping files on your computer is non-negotiable.
