Can I Flourish With An SAT Tutor?

Generally, there are two distinct types of students who flourish with an SAT tutor:

-Those who prefer private instruction catered to their specific needs, free from the judgment or scrutiny of their peers.

-High performers who want to reach a specific score goal in a short time.

In either case, the efficiencies of having an SAT Tutor will help you quickly and effectively.

Having an SAT tutor who was a National Merit Finalist himself will give you the confidence that your SAT coach knows the SAT game, having performed extremely well on the test himself.

Also, knowing that you’ll likely need only 5-15 hours of face to face instruction to reach your score goal helps remove the worry of time.

You have a school life and a social life. Likely, you have extracurriculars and sports as well. Adding the burden of time-intensive SAT prep is a dismal  prospect. So, choose to use your time most effectively.

What Type Of Tests Do I Take With An SAT Tutor?

First, you will take a Real Practice SAT test to establish your baseline score. Though you might have taken a Real SAT recently, you likely won’t have received your scores until at least 3 weeks after your test date.

Now you’re asking yourself: why the emphasis on Real? What does that mean?

There are 2 types of Real in this context:

1: a Real SAT, basically an official SAT taken at a College Board testing center, or

2: a Real Practice Test, one provided by the College Board. These are available free of charge below.

It is the latter Real that is important to you. Most big-box test prep companies create their own tests with their own grading scale. The problem is that their Unreal tests are harder and graded on a harder scale than the Real SAT (Wall Street Journal article). This is a common sales tactic used to create an artificial sense of fear, doubt, and worry.

So, rather than worry about a Fake score from a Fake test, take a Real practice test (download here).

What Do I Do Between My Sessions With My SAT Tutor?

You will need to do the following work between sessions:

1: Take a full practice test every two weeks.

2: Work from an SAT Workbook every week.

For #1, you can select from 2 options:

A: Take the entire test in one sitting (see test day protocol/timing here).

B: Split the test into 2 days. Take the first 2 sections one day and the final 2 sections the next day.

While plan A is preferred, plan B is sometimes OK. You will want to replicate test conditions and use plan A to establish your baseline score. Then, about 2 weeks before your real test, take another Real practice test at one sitting to gauge your expected score.

For #2, we will discuss this once you begin your SAT Private Tutoring.

How Long Are My SAT Tutor Sessions? How Long Does The Process Last?

Typically, you’ll establish your baseline score at least 6-8 weeks before your first Real SAT test. Then, you’ll meet with me, on average, 1 hour one to two times/week. Variability depends on where you are now relative to your score goal and the overall busyness of your schedule (how much time you can work on your own between sessions).

Fortunately, the scheduler for mcstutoring.com allows you to set sessions at times that work for you. That needn’t be the same time for you every week and needn’t even be every week.

Overall, your prep timeline is usually anywhere from 6-8 weeks out from the test. Again, your mileage may vary as school and other events take up time.

Ease And Flexibility Of Scheduling

Dropdown Calendar for First Session

Many of us have busy and constantly-changing schedules. If this is the case for you or your student, you will enjoy the ease and flexibility of scheduling with mcstutoring. Whether you are seeking help for test preparation or math tutoring, scheduling with the Acuity scheduler is fantastic.

First, you can schedule sessions as often as you wish. That allows for flexibility in scheduling. If you need a session one week and then not for another month, that’s fine. The scheduler allows for that.

Second, you can schedule sessions for 30, 60, or 90-minute increments. If you’re in the 1450+ range, you’ll likely only need 30 minutes to review all your SAT questions.

Third, payment is a breeze. You can pay via PayPal using the scheduler. If you already have a PayPal account, you are fine. If not, PayPal accepts credit cards and even checks. Should you have a balance in your account at the end of the school year, you will be refunded the remaining balance.

Fourth, you will receive reminders about your sessions. You will receive an email confirmation when you set a session. Then, on the day of the session, you’ll receive a text reminder. This helps you keep on track with your scheduled sessions.

How Do I Get Started?

Set up an initial session here. Be sure to use a discount code GOOGLE. That way, you can save 50% on your first session.

Prior to your first session, you’ll want to take a REAL practice test (download here; be sure to use the answer sheet). Please be sure to follow the instructions on the page. The only cardinal sin of test prep is to leave an answer blank.

Then, once you’ve taken your Real practice test, paid for and set your first session, you’ll use Camscanner to scan your answers (instructions here). You’ll email me your scan and I will grade it. This is done only for those who have set a first session.

Then, you’re ready to get started with great help from an SAT Private Tutor. May you enjoy your journey of score improvement!
